What Lies Beyond
Success: Reinventing Your Game
People at the
peak of their professional game take some pretty interesting steps
to maintain their success, steps that attract attention and create
more questions than answers. Take Tiger Woods for example.
Before 2002
Tiger’s formula for success was astonishing and unbeatable in every
way. So why on earth would the world’s best golfer change his game?
When his weaknesses could no longer compensate for his talents - the
world would see the results. Tiger realized this in 2003 when Vijay
Singh replaced him as the No. 1 golf player in the world. He was
quoted on GolfDigest.com as saying, “You can play from the wrong
position for a long time with good hands, but eventually its’ going
to catch-up with you.” Being really good at something, the best
even, does not guarantee you a permanent position at the top.
Nobody really
knew it at the time, but Tiger's performance was actually a direct
result of a decision he made to reinvent his game. While utilizing
his strengths in 2002, he had a glimpse of what could potentially be
his downfall - a tendency of dropping his club below the ideal swing
line. In 2003 surgery on his problematic knee meant that he would
either have to settle with pain and mediocrity - or he would have to
literally change the way he played the game of golf. Reinvention
is the key to sustained success, even if you are in the prime of
your game.
Luckily for
Tiger, it was perspective that drove him beyond success. Being the
master of his own game would mean reinventing his swing. The old
techniques he had used to gain success were simply not working - and
so he sought out different perspective from instructor Hank Haney in
2004. Even the best have blind spots - they simply remove them
from the game through a change in perspective.
On July 23rd of
2006, Tiger won the British Open, defending his title for a second
time. It has been a three-year journey to get back on top. Had Tiger
not reinvented his game however, what would have happened to his
once successful career?
No matter what
you do for a living, every day is another swing at success. Whether
you are a young professional climbing in your career or a seasoned
veteran, seeking a new perspective on success might just give you
the edge you need. The question is…are you ready to go beyond
success?
